How one modern slaughterhouse raises the bar for Myanmar’s poultry sector

Throughout Asia, the demand for sustainable and safe poultry products is growing rapidly. In the face of increased competition and movements towards chain integration, a volatile market and changing sales channels, many independent poultry farmers in Myanmar are struggling to tap into this potential. Together with key players in the poultry sector, De Heus Myanmar developed the first modern slaughterhouse in the country, providing independent farmers a better price for their products and access to a premium market.

Re-discovering the basics for powering progress

Farmers, breeders, butchers and feed professionals together under one roof – that was the unique collaboration that the Turkey Academy in Poland provided. It was the first collaboration of its kind, enabling participating parties to share insights about business opportunities and challenges. Now, with new regulations under way, turkey farmers are under more pressure than ever. To help them, De Heus is exploring how to bring insights from the Academy into the spotlight.

August Lingnau: Regional Sales Manager and National Dairy Product Manager

“I’ve always felt at home in the outdoors,” says August Lingnau, Regional Sales Manager for KwaZulu-Natal and National Dairy Product Manager at De Heus South Africa. Growing up in Phalaborwa, a small town in South Africa’s Limpopo province, he developed a deep appreciation for the land and the role of agriculture. This passion led him to pursue a BSc in Animal Science at the University of Pretoria, followed by a Master’s degree in Ruminant Nutrition at Stellenbosch University. Collaborating with the Outeniqua Research Farm, he worked under industry experts like Professors Robin Meeske and Christiaan Cruywagen. “Their passion for dairy nutrition was contagious, and it pushed me to explore the field in greater depth,” August says.

Olga Wodzýnska – Head of the broiler department

    Arno Willemink – COO Asia

Growing up on a dairy farm, as a child Arno Willemink (32) was naturally already involved in the livestock business. His Industrial Engineering and Management degree at the University of Twente would not lead him directly to the agriculture sector. In 2012, however, he embarked on an internship for De Heus Vietnam, doing market research about the Myanmar market which De Heus was planning to open up. This made him aware of the opportunities for Dutch agricultural companies abroad. After completing his master’s degree in Financial Engineering and Management, he started as Trainee Purchasing & Trading in 2015. Since 2018 Arno has lived in Asia, first as Purchasing Director Asia in Vietnam and since 2022 as COO Asia.

Planting mangrove forests to contribute to sustainability

Mangrove forests are an important tool in the fight against climate change. That's why the Indonesian government has committed to an ambitious programme of mangrove reforestation in the coming years. As part of its sustainability activities, De Heus Indonesia partnered with the government in a mangrove planting project in East Java. Based on the results of this project, our colleagues are using the knowledge and experience gained to develop other mangrove projects.
