Stimulating and enabling research
A consortium of companies within the Netherlands Association of the Animal Feed Industry, NEVEDI, and the animal production chain, in collaboration with Wageningen University, has developed a Livestock Research programme: Feed4Foodure. De Heus financially supports this programme. In fact, we fulfil a pioneering role in this. And we not only provide financial support, we also gladly share the use of numerous research facilities on our own research farms. Our objective is to make a substantial contribution to a sustainable and healthy livestock industry in the Netherlands. And together, to reinforce our competitive position on the global market. Feed4Foodure focuses on three areas of research:

Safety and consistency: our two core ingredients for animal feed production
All over the world, De Heus provides farmers with the feed solutions and technical support they need to achieve their individual farm objectives. To meet the nutritional needs of livestock and aquaculture and generate predictable results, De Heus has implemented a consistent feed quality approach across all its business units. So, whether you’re in Poland, the Netherlands or Ghana – every bag of feed that a De Heus factory produces tomorrow will have the same feed quality as today.

In Indonesia, bacteria help shrimp farmers to improve their biosecurity
Over a decade ago, bacteria-related diseases started to emerge in Indonesia, causing a significant loss of production to the shrimp industry. Teguh Winarno and Kadi Mey Ismail are on a mission to help local shrimp farmers optimise their biosecurity and boost their business.

Goal-oriented innovation
Every day, we visit thousands of livestock famers around the world. Using the insights gained this way, our International Research & Development Centre is able to continuously develop new ideas and product improvements

Research at local research farms worldwide
In almost all countries where we are located, we have local research farms. Here, we perform a myriad of feed tests using a wide range of variables. This way, we are able to accurately determine the exact type of feed, and the precise circumstances, that will lead to strong, healthy animals and an efficient feed conversion. The knowledge we acquire thanks to these research farms will be used to improve and innovate our products.

How quality genetics have been transforming the nation’s poultry value chain
Faced with increased competition and chain integrations, a volatile market and increasing consumer demands, Vietnamese independent poultry farmers’ access to a steady supply of quality day-old chicks was disappearing. Driven by the growing demand for quality farm inputs, a joint venture was established between De Heus Vietnam and Belgabroed – to secure farmers’ access to quality inputs and break ground for a much bigger strategy to bring quality poultry meat to the Vietnamese consumer.

Stimulate the efficiency of phosphates and minerals
In Europe dairy farmers are limited in their business management by the phosphate regulations introduced on 2 July 2015. If they want to grow without purchasing extra land or extra phosphate rights, they simply have to produce more milk per kilogramme of phosphate. This requires a careful strategy, which may vary from one company to the next.

Pioneers in sustainable poultry farming
In 2013, we entered into agreements with several Dutch chain parties to make the production of chicken more sustainable. A number of requirements, including the use of more slowly growing broiler breeds, were laid down. But research has demonstrated that these breeds react differently to energy-protein ratios in their feed. That is why De Heus has developed modified feeds for the different segments. Depending on the segment a poultry farmer has chosen for, our specialists will give customised and reliable feed advice for optimum results. It is with justifiable pride that we can state that we are able to provide every poultry farmer with a compound feed to match their specific business operation. The use of more slowly growing broiler breeds, in combination with the correct feeding strategy, has reduced antibiotics use to virtually nil.
