SustainabilityHow a De Heus plant can support fish farming in Uganda and help feed the nation
In June 2023, De Heus began construction of its first dedicated aquafeed plant in Uganda. Located in Njeru, near Jinja, on the north shore of Lake Victoria, the factory is expected to start operations early next year. Once the facility reaches full capacity, it will produce some 50,000 tons of fish feed per year, helping to support a rapidly developing aquaculture industry. In addition, it will help to improve the diet and food security of the country's growing population and boost local agriculture.

SustainabilityHelping farmers in South Africa reduce their use of antibiotics
Antibiotic resistance is a major threat to human and animal health. De Heus is committed to not only eliminating antibiotics from its feed by 2030, but also to helping farmers reduce their use of antibiotics as a preventive measure against disease. The EU has already introduced regulations restricting the routine use of antibiotics in agriculture, but in countries like South Africa, legislation governing antibiotics is still lenient. As a result, administering antibiotics to animals is an everyday practice on South African farms.

SustainabilityLooking at the road ahead: De Heus' commitment to sustainable transport in The Netherlands
Every day, a fleet of 100 trucks hits the road to deliver animal feed from the Netherlands to customers across The Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Germany and the northern part of France. Traveling up to 100,000 kilometres annually, these heavy-duty vehicles are responsible for significant CO2 emissions which add to the footprint of our feed. Three logistics professionals from De Heus share their experiences with a more sustainable approach to truck transport.

SustainabilityPioneers in sustainable poultry farming
In 2013, we entered into agreements with several Dutch chain parties to make the production of chicken more sustainable. A number of requirements, including the use of more slowly growing broiler breeds, were laid down. But research has demonstrated that these breeds react differently to energy-protein ratios in their feed. That is why De Heus has developed modified feeds for the different segments. Depending on the segment a poultry farmer has chosen for, our specialists will give customised and reliable feed advice for optimum results. It is with justifiable pride that we can state that we are able to provide every poultry farmer with a compound feed to match their specific business operation. The use of more slowly growing broiler breeds, in combination with the correct feeding strategy, has reduced antibiotics use to virtually nil.

SustainabilityResponsible use of antibiotics: A holistic approach to animal health
Farmers of today have to cope with many challenges. Next to volatile prices and increasing market demands, they face upcoming legislation and societal concerns about animal welfare and responsible use of antibiotics. To support farmers in tackling these challenges at the same time, De Heus developed the Natural Power programme. A hands-on and tailored approach to healthy, highly productive animals by boosting their natural power. Increasing farm performance and supporting farmers to use antibiotics responsibly.
