How sourcing raw materials locally can improve the lives of rural farmers in Ghana

To achieve a sustainable supply chain and foster communities, De Heus Ghana's ambition is to purchase at least 50% of its raw materials from local sources by 2025. In this way, the company can improve the whole supply chain along with the economic position of local farmers. This requires the local business unit to collaborate with strong partners who share De Heus' values.

Pioneering the use of residual flows in animal feed

As part of its sustainability strategy, De Heus aims to increase the use of residual flows, by-products and food waste. By taking the residual nutrients contained in by-products from human food production and incorporating them in our animal feed, we not only conserve scarce resources, we also stimulate circularity. While we use residual flows as ingredients in our compound feed, a significant number of farmers are using increasing volumes of residual flows in liquid feed. Ruud Bens, Product Manager Liquid Feed, tells us what progress De Heus has made in supporting farmers in the use of residual flows in liquid feed and the prospects for the future.

Pioneering aquaculture research on the banks of the Mekong river

One of the biggest challenges in aquafeed production today is understanding the precise nutritional requirements for different species of farmed fish and shrimp. That is why the global research centre on the banks of the Mekong river in Vietnam is gathering important data that will shed light on the efficient conversion of feed into animal protein. By optimising the impact of aquafeed, farmers around the world can raise healthier fish and shrimp with less feed costs.

How one modern slaughterhouse raises the bar for Myanmar’s poultry sector

Throughout Asia, the demand for sustainable and safe poultry products is growing rapidly. In the face of increased competition and movements towards chain integration, a volatile market and changing sales channels, many independent poultry farmers in Myanmar are struggling to tap into this potential. Together with key players in the poultry sector, De Heus Myanmar developed the first modern slaughterhouse in the country, providing independent farmers a better price for their products and access to a premium market.
