From observing pigs to building trusted teams, Donald’s work sits at the very start of the food chain. When asked what he does for a living, Doan Quoc Viet - known to many as Donald - keeps it refreshingly simple: “I keep the animals healthy, and I keep people safe.” Since joining De Heus in October 2024 as Animal Health Manager in Vietnam, that mindset has guided everything he does.

A job without routine
Donald doesn’t have typical working days and that’s exactly what he enjoys. From farm to farm, barn to barn, he observes, listens, smells, and even tastes feed when needed. “Pigs can’t tell you what’s wrong,” he says. “So you learn to read them differently. I use all my senses. The process of observing, reading and interpreting never gets old. Every case is a small puzzle, and I genuinely enjoy solving them. The unpredictability is not exhausting; it is what keeps the work alive for me.”

What surprises a lot of his friends is that this job also takes him internationally. The pig health industry is much larger than most people realize. Substantial research happens globally every year, and it gets presented at conferences, seminars, and training events all over the world. He has had the chance to attend to many of them. His friends find it funny how a pig vet traveling around the world? But that is exactly the point. When you take your field seriously, the field takes you places.

Impact that reaches the table
For Donald, animal health is about more than performance metrics. Healthy pigs mean well-performing farms, safe products for customers, and food he’s proud to serve his own family. That connection keeps his standards high and his motivation personal.
Leadership through trust
One of his proudest achievements isn’t a project, but a team. During the CJ Feed & Care acquisition, his Genetics team ran smoothly without constant oversight. He had a team he trusted completely, people who knew their responsibilities, who could handle situations independently, confident, and steady. “That’s real leadership,” Donald reflects. “Building something that works even when you’re not there.” That is what Donald built, and it is the thing he value most from my time here so far.
