Rafał Blachowski - senior distribution specialist
Choosing to work at De Heus was not accidental. In 2009, Rafał graduated in commodity science from the Faculty of Animal Bioengineering at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn. His first job was working as a sales representative. In 2014, whilst browsing through job advertisements, he came across a vacancy for a distribution specialist at De Heus. Having graduated in agricultural studies, he was familiar with animal nutrition. Furthermore, he had already heard a lot of good things about De Heus. Many of his college colleagues worked at De Heus and praised the conditions and opportunities there. Rafał applied without hesitation and was invited to an interview at the company's headquarters. In 2015, he officially joined the De Heus team.

Piglets
Successful approach to piglet farming at De Heus experimental farm
Piglet rearing at the De Heus 'De Elsenpas' Centre for Practical Research has proved very successful. The specific approach and strict hygiene protocols produce excellent results: many weaned piglets per sow, good weaning weights, low loss rate and high feed intake averaging 700 grams per piglet in the farrowing stable. According to farm manager Zias Lukasse, the experimental farm is therefore one of the frontrunners in the pig farming sector.

Dairy
Immediate insight into dairy herd ration efficiency
Because rations must produce returns, the ration efficiency on a dairy farm is of key importance. Ration efficiency is expressed in kilograms of fat and protein-corrected milk (FPCM) produced by a dairy herd on the basis of the kilograms of dry matter consumed. From an economic perspective, for a dairy farm it is essential that the production per kilogram of dry matter is as high as possible. Assuming equal costs, this increases the farm's cash flow. Economic calculations involving the assessment of a new farming strategy clearly demonstrate that it is easier for a farm to meet its obligations when, in addition to any growth in the number of cows, it also realises higher production levels.

Sustainability
A surprising source of sustainable ingredients
A third of all food for human consumption in South Africa is never consumed. This food usually ends wasted in landfills. By law, food that has not been sold before its expiration date is no longer suitable for human consumption. This forces bakeries in South Africa to take back any bread that has reached the end of its shelf life in the supermarket. De Heus saw a unique opportunity to use the valuable nutrients of this bread and prevent them from going to waste.
