At De Heus Ghana, we believe resilience in farming starts with harmony between animals, farmers, and the environment. That’s why we launched Roots for Resilience—a five-year sustainability initiative tackling one of the biggest challenges for poultry farmers: heat stress.

Why this matters

High temperatures during the dry season can severely impact bird health and productivity. Our solution is simple yet powerful: strategic tree planting around poultry houses. These trees create natural shade, reduce heat stress, and improve animal welfare—leading to healthier birds and better farm performance.

Our goals

  • Plant 10,000+ trees across Ghana’s poultry-producing regions over five years.
  • Reduce poultry house temperatures by up to 5°C during peak heat periods.
  • Restore degraded land and improve air quality for local communities.

Beyond the farm gate

The benefits extend far beyond individual farms:

  • Cooler, greener farms for better productivity.
  • Microclimates that support biodiversity and community well-being.
  • Carbon capture to help fight climate change.
Roots of Resilience

Planting trees to mitigate heatstress

Leading by example

We’ve already started with Ransboat Farms, led by a renowned poultry farmer and recent award winner as Ghana’s Best Farmer (2nd runner-up). Through partnerships like this, we aim to inspire a tree-planting culture among all poultry farmers.

Our commitment to progress

This initiative is part of our broader mission to Power Progress in Ghana’s animal nutrition sector. By combining innovation with sustainability, we ensure today’s farms can feed future generations while protecting the ecosystems they rely on.

Roots for Resilience is more than an environmental project—it’s a promise to restore hope, strengthen resilience, and create lasting change for generations to come.
